Hello, Dreamers!
This week, I'm going to talk about a webcomic with fantasy elements in the real world.
These kind of stories always make me giddy so I REALLY wanted to sink my teeth into this one.
Skin Deep, created by Kory Bing, is a most interesting webcomic.
All mythological creatures are real, along with some folklore ones and even some popular culture ones. The thing is, they're normal people, even if they are harpies, can shapeshift into lions, or have magic powers like bugbears.
|
Here you have two wonderlanders, a white stag and a human trying to figure out if he's tripping or not |
The comic is, so far, a series of short stories about different character groups in this peculiar world. Some stories are about a magic being who believed themselves to be human finding out they are not, some are about humans being introduced to one of the secret cities the magical beings live, and a few more are part of an overarching plot about a certain kind of magical being that was believed to be extinct, when a new one pops up, and how it throws everything off balance something fierce.
|
Some beautifully done art, too. |
In general, it's been a lot about character relationships and interaction, and how people deal with change and the strange when those are the very basis of life.
Not only that, but lots of nods to many different cultures and mythos are strewn all over the place, as they should be expected for a work like this.
|
And then we've got the small conflicts between magical beings, and the peculiar way some deal with it. |
I highly recommend you give this webcomic a try if you, like me, love folklore and mythology. Seeing magic set up in a modern day world where it ISN'T the big secret that doesn't mix with the world is also something there is a severe lack of, which makes this story even more appealing (at least to me).
It has only a few stories so far, so it's perfect for anyone dreading an archive binge.
Go check it out!

Bugbears are super charming, let me tell you. |
I hope you have a wonderful week, and keep on dreaming!
